i've never accepted those rules as valid.
i believe that a person will visit a site if they want to, and that they will dig for content if it is important to them or interests them.
that being said, i do firmly believe in usable and functional interfaces in software and on the web. but, making something useable to a person doesn't necessarily mean limiting it to 3 clicks or less.
i support web standards as set forth by the w3...the practical reasoning behind them is sound in my opinion.
