    gumtree, gumtree, gumtree. that way you can check the bike out in the flesh before buying. If u really don't know a damn thing about bikes maybe buy new. just dont be seduced by a nice make and model if it's in poor condition- you can't just fix it up it'll cost more than a new one's worth

    but do a search for the phone number if u see it come up loads of times it's a stolen bike. I recommend a hybrid, faster than a chunky mountain bike but more control and pothole resistant than a road bike.

    just make sure the brakes are top notch and the wheels don't wobble when they spin. if they're a bit buckled, you have to loosen the brakes to stop the brakes from hitting the wheel... which is just not cricket.

    always try ride with a repair kit, pump and spare tube in yr bag.

    helmet is a must you're a moron if you don't use one. Was in A&E last year with a mate who wasn't wearing one and wiped out in front of me :s
