    Saw a documentary recently by BBC about Neanderthals. It talked about how these shorter, uglier species of humans lived in northern Europe (Scandinavian countries) until they were wiped out by modern humans immigrating up from Africa.

    One theory is that the legends about trolls and dwarfs are actually based on this other species. I'd be surprised if any of them survived to the present day though (also they didn't really look like apes).
