Social media is more likely a convergence of random variables. Look at its evolution and you will see how its evolved and influenced. Looking at who created it is absurd. Looking at the different variables of why people adapted and what it offers as value/cost is important. And looking at the possible future problems of having everyone connected can have. The spread and saturation of disinformation and what not.

Herd mentality is a natural trait in humans, an instinct. Its not rational and the less intelligent are likely to go with it. Social media bombards entertaining and largely unimportant info. And the effects of bombardments of mundane info can have on a persons valuing system and ability to give it independant thought, especially when they keep getting more and more. It becomes more of a hum and u link certain hype words and phrases and just go with it.

Tough to calculate the probabilities of multiple changing variable but its a guess and check kind of game, and you can slowly dial it in with a high percentage. You jsut gotta look at the big picture first then move in on it it like that ferris buehler museum scene.
