    fill me in.
whats the worst that can happen reactor meltdown wise? 10 mile radius of heavy radioactivity? 20, 30?

Wasnt the big problem with Chernobyl that it exploded skyward and threw nuclear fuel and also far more dangerous fission products (thanks wiki) into the air and onto the surround area, also creating a radioactive cloud.

i imagine that wont happen in japan, surely the reactor is far more sophisticated.

    • problem with Chernobyl was it burned the fuel uncontrolled..autoflavour
    • Chernobyl also didn't have a containment dome surrounding the reactor. No containment of release.ghandolf
    • However if the fuel melts through the bottom of the reactor vessel into the earth... that's a big problem.ghandolf
    • Unit 3's fuel, contains plutonium. The half-life of decay for that is 24,000 years.ghandolf
    • Chernobyl didn't have containment vessels.ETM
