  OK, not trying to be insensitive, but does anyone else feel like California is freaking out a bit too much for what looks like minimal damage from the waves that hit Santa Cruz? All I've seen and heard is that boats and docks got pretty badly messed up. I know a few people got swept out to sea. But from what I can tell, land based property and buildings did not suffer any damage.

  And they're saying it's "imperiling infrastructure and public safety?" And "..inundated California beaches, ports and harbors and prompted the opening of emergency shelters, the governor said in his proclamation."

  Am I missing something here? Is there some massive damage to stuff other than boats and docks that I'm not aware of? That to me does not warrant emergency shelters. All the boats I've seen in pictures were pleasure craft.
