I went to Iceland last June, and want to go back again this summer. It's an awesome place. It was right after the volcano went off.
I would recommend a 4X4 as we did a lot of exploring in the evening since it was light 24/7 in June. We would catch the typical tourist spots during they day, grab dinner, and then head out. You can really go anywhere and do anything — it's really amazing.
I would also recommend getting the farm vouchers, it's a really cheap way to sleep comfortably, and there are spots all over the island. Famers sign up to be a host, you call them during the day to see if they have an open room, and then just crash with them. Everyone was very nice, and had breakfast in the morning. Some are more commercial, some are just an old lady living by herself.
