  I won a design comp once for a t-shirt.

  The result was an all expenses paid scholarship in design for 9 months. All in all it would of been worth 15 grand or so. The only real benefit to them was they got the design - which they put on shirts for other people in the program as part of an orientation pack, as well as the obvious brand engagement and traffic generated by the competition. They sold the tees on their site too, but i doubt they would of made their money back.

  Best experience of my life, a good example of a design competition benefiting everyone involved :)
