I think this has been are operating principle since agriculture got invented. I mean what else is organized religion, which went along with that process, other than a way to addict a now sedintary people to sitting around on a patch of dirt to a new way of life? I mean the old hunter-gatherer thang, which we did for hundreds of thousands of years was a pretty vibrant, in the moment way of life. Once you plant your ass in one spot and start digging in the dirt things suddenly become a whole lot less interesting for the majority of the population - so you addict them to fake shit to keep the interest - you know "Look out or the imaginary winged beast will come! Oh no, the rain stopped, it's because so-and-so's high chiefs cousin was sleeping with the pissboy..we must gather and have a ritual and kill some people" shit. You have to elevate the crisis or this whole civilization thing goes south due to inherent boredom.
