    Board:

Brands really aren't gonna mean a thing if he's just getting started.
He'll probably just want whichever one he thinks looks cool - which is fine.

Take him to a shop and have him stand on a few to see which shape/width feels comfortable for him. Again, since he's just getting started, he'll probably just go for looks.

It'll take him a few boards before he really knows which brand/shape/width he likes.

    Trucks:

I've only ever skated Venture - can't give too much feedback here.
As with the board, it's not gonna matter much since he's just getting into it. Indy, venture, destructo - all are good, all have their own loyal customers.

    Wheels/Bearings.

Depending on what/where he is skating can justify what size/durometer (hardness). If he is skating parks/transition - something around a 56 or bigger and pretty hard would be good. Street - something smaller and hard-soft would be good. Soft wheels will allow him to roll over more and not get thrown of for rolling over a sunflower seed, but they'll wear out and develop flat spots much quicker. Brands aren't going to matter much here - I usually just skate blanks since they're cheaper. Spitfire has been a brand around for years and have their wheel game pretty solid.

For bearings, I'd go for something cheap as he'll probably fuck em up by rolling through water or just general wear n tear. As he progresses, I'd say Swiss are the way to go. A bit pricey but worth it.

More or less, just don't get him something that's from K-Mart/Wallmart. Take him to a shop and get him a solid setup - if he ends up getting into it, he'll figure out what he likes/dislikes along the way.

    • Thanks. Does the size matter? We didn't have choices in my day! There isn't a shop I can take him too, though.formed
    • Lengths are all gonna be relatively the same +- a half inch depending on the brands. It's more about the width which generally goes from 7.5" - 8". Though, wider and narrower boards are starting to pop up here and thereduckseason
    • usually runs between 7.5 - 8 inches. Though, some wider and narrower boards are starting to pop up.duckseason
