@Busterboy - I used to think the same thing... and on somewhat of a whim, I enrolled in a training gym to learn more about it. I never watched it on TV really, but I was interested in learning a martial art, and part of the classes were on Jiujit-su.
I quickly learned how much tecnique it is. Now, there are fighters who just brawl and want to hurt poeple. I haven't met one of them yet, and chance are I'd stay away from them. The place I train everyone is happy and respectful. No one wants to hurt the other person. In the rare situations when someone is hurt, the class stops and makes sure the person is ok.

The US audience wants to see blood, and boo's the technical fights, which is a shame. Makes me angry that many US folks just want to see a brawl, but it is what is it.

I don't think the sport is as animalistic as you make it, but the fans may be :)

    • Yeah I hate it when they separate technical clinches against the cage or on the ground... they ARE fighting.BuddhaHat
    • before I learned about technique I was like "punch him!!", now I like the ground work so much better....jfletcher
    • just a little education can go a long way :) hahahajfletcher
