    LEDs use less power so they're good for laptops, but white LEDs in general change colour temp over their life. AFAIK fluorescents are more stable in colour temp. Some really expensive monitors use R/G/B LEDs which don't suffer the same issue (NEC Spectraview Reference).

    both fluorescents and LEDs use a prism to spread light across the screen. some of these are probably better than others, I imagine subtle imperfections could be magnified by the prism.

    colour shifts across the screen as you describe are likely due to panel type, not backlight. look for an IPS panel for better colour accuracy and viewing angles.
