Yes, he definitely used one of the highest end cameras available.I think when he says "it's the least important element" he's purposely exaggerating just to make a point of how important composition, contrast, color, tone, balance, use of light/shadow etc. is. Might as well add to the list how a photographer relates to clients, subjects & crew on set too.
The camera is important, but so is every other detail that goes into creating a great image/shoot.
