Terrible. It's a very ugly side of UK society.

The blame can't lie solely on the shoulders of those who participate though. The UK is in a strange position. We're isolated, being an Island - and I think that this has a negative effect on our standing in mainland Europe, but socially the UK is also very segregated via class.

To a certain extent, I reckon the people involved have been failed by society. It doesn't make it more acceptable .. but I think it might help to show how deep rooted the problem is.

There's a 'Daily Mail'-led point of view that would quickly dismiss these people as 'chavs abroad' .. and talk about how society is doomed, and how we should all return to traditional values - when it was actually the failure of these traditional values that brought our society to this point.

A more progressive politics is needed. Poverty breeds desperation, and desperation manifests itself in many negative ways. Commercialism breeds the empty, vacuous pursuit of instant reward and gratification. If we dealt with these two central issues I think things might be able to start to get better.

    • The people in the article aren't poverty stricken. They work in call centres and live with their parents.Fax_Benson
    • I think that there's a divide between people who are taught to aspire and those who aren't.lukus_W
