Oh man... I went through the same thing.
Can't offer suggestions on the ring size thing, but make sure you browse www.bluenile.com. I bought my fiance's engagement ring there and got a great deal. Talk to someone on the phone, tell them your price range, and they will give you great information on what best features you can get in that range without just sitting there going "give me the biggest thing I can afford." It comes down to so much more than size, believe me.
