    @georges

    I agree that there is plenty to blame America for...as the good Rev Wright said, "God damn America" for its actions in foreign policy which are not at all in line with the ideals we claim to support here at home. Of course America is not unique in this regard...most empires throughout history have acted this way.

    At the same time I think some give America too much credit, and demagogues in the Middle East often use America as a scapegoat for all their problems. America of today is not stopping Iran or any other country from liberalizing, in fact we would love it so we could sell them Hollywood movies, hamburgers and shitty pop music;)

    By the way, was having dinner with an Iranian friend the other night...he pointed out (as I mentioned earlier) that Iran had Islam was traditionally not Islamic but had Islam imposed on it at the point of a sword by invading Muslim armies - just within the past thousand years. So in a sense Islam is about as authentic to Iran as Catholicism is to Mexico...not that it matters but it does put things a bit in perspective.

    • OK, sorry, 1.400 year ago...nonetheless, I look forward to their return to Zoroastrianismukit
