    when these events first started in Seattle back in '99, the protesters had very clear messages, mostly against the globalization of the world trade and financial regimes. They (we, since i was among them) thought that globalization as structured by the IMF, World Bank and the WTO, was effectively selling the environment and working poor down the river to "enhance shareholder value", and that the increased disparity between the rich and poor would eventually lead to a global financial collapse.

    none of that happened of course.
