Be honest with yourself and find your strengths and focus on those rather than be a jack of all trades. You mention your web coding strengths, but have little to back that up. From what I see, I agree with interviewers critque that you may lean towards an illustrator. Maybe focus on that as your style or mark. Doesn't mean you have to abandon general web and print work, but approach it with your own style. That's how you can get some recognition.
If instead your prefer the button down, technical side of cartogaphy, GIS etc, than do that. But if you came looking for a job in what we do, I could care less about your maps (even though they are pretty good) because they are not very relevant.
Find a focus and work it.
