Kaczyński wasn't a douchebag, but he was portrayed as such by large news corporations. He was a conservative, but definitely less corrupt than the pro-Euro government. Sure, that's just my opinion.

But yeah, this is unimaginable so many eggs were in one basket.

Let me shine some insider light on the context. They were heading for a ceremony commemorating the extermination of Polish elites by Soviets. In 1940 they took some 22000 Polish, picking out the most educated: army officers, lawyers, architects, doctors, etc. to a camp in Katyń and meticulously shot each one in the back of the head. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kat…
When the mass grave was first discovered 3 years later, Soviets attributed it to the Nazis. Russians weren't keen to admit responsibility for this for years, even when the full story was known.
It wasn't until very recently that Putin finally changed his stance and took part in a ceremony on a cemetery out there with the Polish PM this week. Andrzej Wajda's film Katyń http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0879… was unexpectedly aired in Russian national TV for the first time.
In the last weeks the tension between the two countries seemed to be released for the first time in who knows how long, possibly centuries.
This visit of the President and the entourage was supposed to be greeted by Russian government as a continuation of this sudden Putin love fest towards Poland.

Now, this... could indicate we're "back to normal". I mean, I hear Poles saying "KGB did it, this explains why Putin was playing nice recently".

The presidential election was to be held in the next few months. Kaczyński's opponent technically just won.
Another thing, an American radar system and Patriot missiles station has been on the cards, also discussed recently with the US government. This kept increasing the Polish-Russian tension and sure will work as the "motive" in all those KGB theories...
