I saw this the other week too. Thought it was a very good film - acting for superb, some really touching moments.
I thought the actual themes and arcs seems a bit unclear at times.
I can see how this film was largely a study on rites of passage / puberty / transformation to adulthood. I suppose, in this respect, there were similarities with Pan's Labyrinth, but I think that PL was more successful because the focus of that film was clearer.
I kind of hoped for something a bit more heavy weight - and (to me) it felt that the film was skating a fine line between box-office and indie-flick. The absurdity of some scenes seemed designed to provide 'action' above necessary plot advancement - and I think that was a shame.
Sounds like I'm being a bit down on the film - I did think it was great .. I was just a hoping for a bit more.
