Freshly signed to Rough Trade, 21 year old Mica Levi (aka Micachu) offers up her debut album with assistance from backing band The Shapes and a certain Matthew Herbert, who takes a producer's role on the album - a good booking by anyone's measure. It's admirable that such a renowned technician is able to sound as at home with a lo-fi, anti-folk songstress as he does with an electronically-enhanced big band, yet he helps bring form to Micachu's peculiar emissions without stamping out the idiosyncrasies that make them so beguiling in the first place. In addition to the overbearing sense of ramshackle cool that permeates its every moment, Jewellery is notable for just how constantly surprising and riddled with moments of outright pop brilliance it is.
