Also, the show did get worse as soon as he got married. But...I'm not sure you can have character development without some kind of family-oriented lifestyle thrown in. Some people don't care for this kind of development, but it may necessary in order for the story to go somewhere. Doesn't mean he has to remain this way, but I like seeing the different sides of Dexter.
