starbucks uses inferior beans mixed in with a very small amount of the premium coffee beans. (the shit beans take very little time to grow so they can mass produce them faster, the premium beans take longer and they can't make them fast enough for the demand), so, they mix the two beans together and actually burn the beans for a more 'uniform' taste.
that's why all starbucks coffee has that good ol' burnt taste. it's shite!
i know this because i designed some comps for a luxury brand off coffee a few months ago.
