this may work for you: just create the chart.xls. fill one sheet with the data references to all the other files with data and create the chart on second sheet of chart.xls using data from first sheet.
to do basic data reference to them just type "=" into a cell on chart.xls and then go to the other files and click the spots with data. the cell code will look like =[otherdata.xls]sheetName!$A$100
when you open chart.xls it may ask you to update data (if it was changed on the data files since the last time you opened chart.xls)
