detritus, I agree with your position on sitting around and whining.
However, I find self expression to be completely interesting—to me at least. But I doubt I'm alone when saying so—I've noticed there are usually other people there, whenever I visit a museum.
And I have to admit, I'm actually a fan of people expressing themselves—you know, that whole creative, imaginative, inventive, art-thing. Sometimes it's in the form of a film, where a director expresses him/herself by telling a story. Usually they're using actors and others who gravitate to that industry. Likely because they too also enjoy expressing themselves. Sometimes it's through music, other times through painting. Seriously, since post-modernism what hasn't been used as a vehicle for self expression? Right. So you can see there might be times when even an inelegant typographical exercise is used as such.
My point is that self expression—or as some see it: the cradle of culture, is very much useful, and calling it novel seems like a gross understatement—even if it's in the form of poorly kerned type.
But, back to the schpiel in my graphic. I hope you understand, I don't for a second believe that my exercise (which was less about typography and more about personal discernment) makes a difference in the day to day reality of the system we live in. I don't.
What I do believe is that it might start a dialogue. It might make my friends uncomfortable that I seem to be focusing on how seriously bad we're living our lives on planet earth. It may be what sparks the next spark for someone, I don't know. It's likely to be another grain of sand in the desert. But for me, it's just a shift in the way I've been thinking. Isn't that how one becomes change, effects it from within?
