I get the impression that this may be the kind of thing that seeing it in its intended format (digital 3D, imax, etc) is the only way to do it justice. It may not hold up on small screens, or 2d formats.
Releasing a trailer online may have been the worst thing for it. They probably should have stuck to their and refused to release footage outside of its format. Treat it like live theater, and let word of mouth spread the buzz and get asses in the seats.
