It's actually more than alright.
Just certain areas are... let's say dodgy...
But housing prices are still quite good and, Brick lane/shoreditch is just around the corner if you fancy a full immersion into hipsterdom (especially on a warm sunday sunny afternoon) and there are great places to eat (plus, big part of the creative business relocated in the shoreditch).
It's just... i live there (since 3 years) and work nearby so i can see all the limits of that area.Oh, and tower Hamlets (that borough, that is) is the place which has the highest number of swine flu cases in all europe.
