that article is one of the most vapid and poorly-rationalized pieces of nonsense i've ever read.
these secret societies do indeed have a LOT of fucking symbolism, and for the most part they're extremely basic, usually "essential" in nature- i.e., reduced to their simplest form. the fact that a person can see triangles, eyes, stars, or butterflies in any given situation is NOT indicative of manipulation on the societies' part, it simply means that the symbols adopted by them are already all-pervasive and present in the hive mind.
i can claim that the circle is now MY symbol, but it doesn't mean that all circles everywhere, all over the world, were placed by me.
