I'm not originally from here but to me cardiff is a safe, smallish city with lots of the usual problems but more positive things going for it than most british cities. If you know where to go/look you'll be fine. I haver never had any trouble from anyone etc etc.
what dates will you be going?
the greenman festival is on in a few weeks so if you're there the same time you may find it pretty quiet - http://www.thegreenmanfestival.c…
what kind of stuff are you looking for? art? outdoors? shopping? drinking? raving?
art - there isn't a huge amount to be honest

The Vulcan Pub is one of Cardiff's oldest pubs and to me is a symbol of the ruin of the city - good rough old pub now surrounded on all sides by car parks - http://save-the-vulcan.blogspot.…some decent gig/club promoters

If you can rent a car or get a train head to west wales. Once you're past Swansea, Wales has some of the best beaches, scenery in the UK. I think it's better than devon/cornwall mainly because it is less crowded.
Rhosilli bay is one of my favourite beaches in Wales/world - http://www.enjoygower.com/beache…
also - avoid the chip alley area if you can
