not checked the templates but if it helps OSFA I've created a few Twatter accounts and just used a large background image same as any other webpage. Not done to any specific size but big enough not to repeat in the largest browser window keeping the branding or whatever in place.
Short answer: it doesn't need to be a wierd size.
get a test account, it's quick enough to check out what works/doesn't.
