what it is really useful for sometimes is to see if you know someone connected to someone you have met in real life or are about to meet in real life. Also, you can look up someones background before you meet or after/while they call you. It's useful for researching people... and also for seeing who knows who. It's a public resume and abridged contact DB... plus linkedin typically shows up on the first page of google for your name... if it isn't a common name...
