When Hossa left, it was a pretty big deal. He basically said they had no chance of ever winning the Cup, after playing with them the entire playoffs and second half of the season.
The Penguins wanted him back, gave him a multi-year contract.
He signed with the Red Wings, specifically for a better chance at winning the Cup, for one year and less money.
To his credit, it shows what he wants. People do it in sports all the time (with varying success). But never in this particular fashion, haha.
