It's damn good casting imo. He stole many of the scenes in Watchmen with his brooding and badassness. He also did a fine turn as a creepy pedo sex offender in Little Children, which is sort of what Freddy is all about. If they can manage to create a new iconic character once he's in full make up without copying the original completely or downplaying it too much will remain to be seen.
