now's the time for getting some really get photos of stuff to do to a car that you can't find on Getty.
The transmission is one of the most expensive things to fix on a car. If the car is more of a money vacuum than anything else, time to start putting that money toward something a little more reliable. You can also donate it (tax write off) to certain organizations. They can probably get a mechanic to fix it for them for free.
