    the mayans were sitting on pointy mountains with clear skies and had not much else to do then chop off someone's head every now and then for their great god, so they were watching stars and counting and registering any and every move of them, if you are really bored as a mayan you'd even try and do a bit of math and who knows.. get some accurate shit out of it..

    really, they had not much else to do up there.. they didn't have PS3 or iPhones or shit like that.. let alone QBN..
