I wasn't aware that there was a selection process, but if there is more work submitted than actual pages on the book, there is no way around it, but in the end (hopefully) it should result in higher quality of work don't you think?
Maybe if the book does well and there is an opportunity for a second issue of the book, those who submitted work for this book and didn't make it, could have some prioritah ...
I'm just thinking out loud here...
