There are studies on it, and computers certainly are turning us all into goldfish. The viral, organic nature of surfing the Internet leads you from one fascinating topic to another, but never for very long. It's not like when you used to read a book on one consistent topic, where the mind would be focused for longer periods.
These days we like it drummed down and condensed. Another report I saw showed that student performance varied noticeably from those that sat in the lecture hall and listened to the entire lecture, and those that listened to a recording of the lecture.Those that listened to the recording did much better, because they could stop and start as they chose, and didn't have to focus non-stop for 40 minutes.
