friends by interest is an interesting point doorman. I removed msn from my machine whilst studying as I wasn't concentrating and chatting to friends all the time. Years later I decided to use it for work only and now my msn has around 80 people on it however every single one is either a designer or flash developer maybe the odd project manager, I do not add even family unless they have common interests. Now these friends by interest help me get jobs, answer questions and support everything to do with my career. I can actually count most of them as friends also. But regular friends with no common interest just waste my time and lean on me when they need help. Recognising this does not make you shallow, it just helps you organise your playing fields. i.e. use facebook for talking shit, football and what you had for dinner bollox that you just verbally dribble for the sake of nothing. Then as you say you can partition people as you would weblinks to places you have fast access whilst working at your vocation. They are doing the same, so its fine. So yes I have a clear partition and find it useful to make the distinction.
