I agree with you on your FFFfound view. That is why I sit here and show work that is without much persuasive style but with a thought .. and I do that until I get something I think (and others think) is worthwhile–then I add style and extra touch ups until it grows into its own thing.
This is my ideal and I'm not saying I haven't been inspired by someone else's idea.
I had a job this past year that was really challenging and at one point in the project I became really nervous about finding the right solution so I turned to FFFFound and I found it made me completely insecure and I felt totally lost. I was no longer following a brief ... I was just grabbing at pearls trying to see what would stick. I felt awful about myself for doing that and haven't returned to the site since. I eventually came up with my own solution and it was received well so there was a happy ending.
I know nothing is 100% unique at this stage in design but if I feel it's a solution I came to on a sketch pad or laying in bed, exhausted, closing my eyes and there it is! then I enjoy my work and have a stronger sense of pride in it.
