As an answer - I'd wager that active membership and respectful self-promotion in an online community (not necessarily this one, to all the naysayers and pessimists, a group I'd often include myself in..) would be of more immediate and practical use.
Though - does AIGA (et al) offer discounts on things like business insurance, law and tax advisors (etc)? If so, that'd be of use. I used to be a member of the FSB and the IoD over here in the UK, long enough to gain access to some of their benefits. Professionally though, they were of little use beyond the first year.
