  don't know anything about freehand, but you can drag whatever you want into the swatch pallette and make patterns in illustrator. well, maybe not anything, but most anyway. to define a pattern, group the objects with a blank square that is in the back, and is the exact repeat size. objects can go over the repeat line, illustrator only copies what is inside the box boundry. hope this helps.
