I have done around a hundred covers and I’d say about 96 of them suck a pair of large, hairy balls. And it’s always for the same reasons – the “creative element” of the band always has some shitty “vision” of the band (meaning a biro drawing that their house-mate did while stoned) which must be included. You get into an argument with the bass player, whose boyfriend has “done some graphics before” about whether the logo needs to be 1mm higher on the page.
Over-inflated (unjustified) egos, a mistaken sense of creativity and a general lack of open-ness to the ideas of the designer.
You can trust me on this since I have been in bands as long as I have been designing covers.
