    I think a resume is important, and the portfolio too, but you can easily accomplish the same goals of a cover letter, by just making your email introduction specific to the job, your skills, and basic experience rather than designing something that needs to be updated in InDesign or Illustrator every time, 3 paragraphs = perfect email size. Maybe I assume too much, but most jobs i am interested in start with an email to ;D
