Children (who have undeveloped immune systems) are more likely to have food allergies. People have been known to outgrow allergies to milk, soy, and eggs after childhood. However, peanut, tree nut, and shellfish allergies tend to be lifelong. In fact, the reactions to these foods may become more severe over time.
Additionally, if a person has another immune system condition, he or she may be at increased risk for a strong reaction to the food allergen. For example, people who have asthma or eczema, as well as food allergies, may have a higher risk of experiencing a severe allergic emergency.
