    i can't speak about the nikons, but i can illuminate a little about the canons. the sensor in the 400d is near the same as the 40d's - so i wouldn't spend the extra to upgrade to a 40d unless you plan on taking a lottt of pictures or really want the faster processor/extra features. the money saved could go to a nice lens or flash.

    that being said, the consumer-level canon dslr's have a shutter rated at 10,000 actuations, which is very easy to go over if you shoot a lot. my digital rebel's af mirror locked up at about 20k clicks - now it's a manual-focus only affair :) my 30d is still going strong at around the same number of shots.

    the key is, don't overspend! the used market for digital slr's is very very strong, so if you ever feel like you need to upgrade, you won't lose your initial investment.
