thanks blaw, but through a convoluted process of linking, embedding then breaking apart again, I've managed to retrieve the bits of the file that weren't loading.
Stupid thing is, I don't usually use 'symbols', or patterns really - I only did so last night because my old machine was getting a bit creaky under the stupidly heavy tiling.
So much for labour-saving devices!
