They obviously didn't consult Douglas Adams first, an unwise move which could eventually bring the intergalactic economy to a screeching halt (after all, look what happened to Magrathea).
The currency should have been called Altairean dollars.
A meal at The Restaurant at The End of The Universe would set you back 1.8 billion Altairean dollars, however if you put one Altairean cent into a trust fund at birth, by the time you reach the restaurant you could feasibly buy meals for everyone in the restaurant.
