I do agree that album artwork and packaging is sometimes worth buying the CD for. Even to "support" the artist, but I'm still unsure of what exactly this means.

The band "Stars" had their most recent CD available for download (through online purchase) about one month before the release date specifically because they knew someone would inevitably leak it anyway. On their website, they mentioned this: "It's our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators." Clever.

Nowadays artists are adding more extra stuff into their CDs because they realize that there needs to be more of an incentive for many people to buy the product. Although if you're a real fan and you have the money it makes sense to just get the album. Or just go to the show with your newly purchased CD and get them to sign it like I do :)
