Yup, on PC, at least, 512mb is barely enough to run XP and Photoshop side by side.
1gb is a minimum these days - 2gb is becoming the next 'standard'. Memory's dirt cheap these days, so why not?
Just ensure that you get good quality, fast-ish RAM - and if you're partnering your old memory with an upgrade, ensure both DIMMs (etc) are the same spec .
