    scratch disks are what your machine will use WHEN it runs out of RAM. it's not a case of IF but WHEN. A lot of RAM will delay your machine from using them but sooner or later they will get used.

    The faster the hard disk and the more dedicated it is to being a scratch disk will be big factors in its performance.

    I once had to wait for 1hr 45 minutes to get a response from Photoshop when working on a 2GB file with 1GB RAM, that was without a dedicated HD as a scratch disk though.
